Judge James Samples Dollarhide, son of James D. Dollarhide and
Barbara Samples Dollarhide; born 12/25/1818 in Kentucky and died 3/2/1899 in Sevier
County, Arkansas. Buried in Dollarhide Cemetery, Foreman, AR. Grandson of
John and Nancy Chittington Dollarhide. James was married first to
Mary King and, after her death, to her sister, Martha
King. Between them he had over 20 children.
James Samples was Justice of the Peace, Sheriff,
County Judge, State Representative for special election in 1861 to vote
for the secession of the state of Arkansas at the beginning of the Civil
War. He also was a member of the 1st Arkansas Volunteers who fought
in the Texas War for Independence, however he became ill and was sent home
and was never discharged from the Texas Army. This picture was found
in Little Rock, AR, in 1980 in the records of the Assembly of the
Arkansas State Representatives.
The 1860 census showed James
Samples and his wife Martha living with children Elizabeth 17, Mary 16,
Martha J. 15, William K. 14, Angeline 12, Lucy 11, Lewis 10, John 8, Laura
7, (Daniel) Simpson 5, Joseph Mc 4, Edward 2, and an unnamed girl child 6
months old.
